Our Impact
University of Illinois Extension puts university knowledge to work across Illinois, partnering with residents, organizations, and communities to address real-world challenges through trusted resources and research-based education.
From Campus to Community
llinois Extension — part of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign — is a public good powerhouse. In all 102 Illinois counties, Extension translates research into practical programs that strengthen families, communities, and economies.
Illinois Extension program areas — 4-H youth development; agriculture and agribusiness; community and economic development; health and community wellness; and natural resources, environment, and energy — focus on these strategic priorities:
Lifelong Learning. Lifelong Impact.
This isn’t just a slogan or a catchphrase. It’s an Illinois Extension commitment.
That commitment means helping young people develop and grow the skills they’ll need in their careers and daily life. It means sharing technology and information to help farmers and communities strengthen food and agricultural systems. And it means providing research-based guidance that fosters health, wellness, and sustainability.
At its core, Extension is about helping Illinois communities thrive today while preparing for tomorrow. We help people solve real-world challenges by providing trusted, research-based education and practical tools to improve their quality of life. We connect local communities across the state with University of Illinois knowledge and resources.
— Matthew Vann, Illinois Extension director and associate dean
4-H: Where Extension Starts
Illinois 4-H is Extension’s established and vibrant youth development program. 4-H builds leadership, workforce readiness, and life skills by connecting youth with caring adults and hands-on learning. It reaches more than 125,900 young people annually through clubs, camps, after-school programs, and special-interest experiences.

- Classrooms and event space for community education.
- Technology-enabled meeting rooms for hybrid and remote engagement.
- A demonstration kitchen, maker space, and teaching garden to promote healthy living and food access.
The flagship Illinois Extension site will unite people from across Illinois and beyond to learn, lead, and make a lasting impact.
