Aledo, IL - University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners of Mercer County invite the community to the "Fall Harvest of Horticulture" event on Thursday, September 14, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, at the Aledo Fire Station, 202 SE 2nd Ave, Aledo, IL 61231.

Discovering the Fascination of Sunflowers and the Vitality of Pollinators

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to explore the fascinating connection between sunflowers and the critical role played by pollinators in our natural landscapes. The evening will feature two engaging presentations:

  1. Unveiling the World of Sunflowers Dive beyond the vibrant facade of sunflowers and unearth their hidden superpowers as a global agricultural crop. Emily Swihart, Extension Educator of Horticulture at Illinois Extension, will guide attendees through the captivating journey of sunflowers, revealing their significance and multifaceted traits.
  2. Bees, Butterflies, and Birds: Your Guide to Being a Habitat Helper Aleshia Kenney, Fish and Wildlife Biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services, will provide insights into the world of pollinator gardens. Discover the benefits of native plants for wildlife, particularly pollinators, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges posed by non-native plant species. Learn about native plants suitable for the region, along with valuable tips for establishing and nurturing them to create a thriving habitat for pollinators.
