KANKAKEE, Ill. - As more families consider growing their own food, chickens are a popular choice for a fresh source of eggs. Learn the basics of caring for chickens, from housing to health in a free online webinar offered by University of Illinois Extension from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 7.

Chickens are considered good stewards of the earth and, when kept in proper conditions, are valuable assets to the garden, lawn, and compost pile, says University of Illinois Extension Local Foods Educator James Theuri. "They also provide backyard joy."

Learn tips for starting and managing a flock of laying chickens, including egg production, housing, nutrition, and health management.
