Rock Island County 4-H Horse Bowl Team Takes 1st Place at State Competition

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –  For the second year in a row, the Rock Island County 4-H Jr. Horse Bowl team took first place at the State Horse Bowl Contest that was held on April 23 at University of Illinois in Champaign. Winning team members were (pictured from left to right): Nick Gorbach, Maddie Oltman, Molly Wannemacher, and Emma Steiger.

The contest tests their knowledge of equine related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. The contest operates very similar to scholastic bowls at school, except all the questions relate to horses, Participants do not need to have horses or be enrolled in the horse project to participate. 

During the individual part of the contest, Emma took 1st place for high-point individual, Maddie took 5th place high individual, while Nick  was 10th place high individual after the 7-11th place tie was broken.

In the Junior Horse Bowl Public Speaking portion, Molly won for formal speech, Mathew was third. Emma came in 2nd in individual presentation as well as 2nd in interpretive reading. Emma and Nick also took 2nd place in team presentation.
