Black-eyed Strawberries

It's hard to believe it with the warm weather we've been having, but some plants suffered frost damage this spring. Strawberry black eye is a condition where the center portion of the flower is injured, resulting in dark brown or black discoloration. Because the center of the flower contains the female reproductive organs and these tissues have been killed, affected flowers will not bear fruit. The good news is that it's an abiotic disease so it's not contagious and, provided we don't experience any more frosts, will not affect new blossoms. If freezing temperatures are predicted, a layer of organic mulch, straw, or even bed sheets can be used to protect the flowers. This insulating layer should be removed as soon as the temperature warms above freezing.
