While you were most likely aware of the uncertainty of life pre-pandemic, for many of us, the global health crisis has heightened the reality of insecurity in the face of inevitable change and loss in our daily lives. During these times, I find it critical to practice strategies to keep me connected to an inner place of shelter and protection.
I find regularly going to a place of refuge helps me stay calm and centered in the eye of the storm. It serves in reminding me of my goals, values, and the kind of person I strive to be. You might think of it as an anchor, or an internal compass guiding you in the right direction.
There are a multitude of mind-body tools that serve to bring one to this inner sense of calm and wisdom. Examples include journaling, spending time in nature, praying and reading spiritual text. For me, my daily meditation practice serves this end.
In my work as a health educator, I regularly share the practice of visualization meditation with youth and adults alike. Even those with no prior meditation experience enjoy the benefits of the guided experience. A favorite is Inner Resource, one I learned in my first children’s yoga teacher training program.
The exercise asks you to utilize your senses as you bring to mind a place where you feel safe, protected, calm and at ease. Inner Resource can be practiced anywhere and anytime you find yourself craving that connection to your true home.
