Discover balance through the elements

One of my favorite resources for creating and maintaining balance in mind, body and spirit is the five element theory. I have worked with the model on and off for over a decade through my studies of yoga and Ayurveda. The five elements provide the foundation of Ayurveda, the ancient system of natural medicine. Ayurveda is a sister science to yoga, both disciplines are rooted in the Vedic tradition of India.

The five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space are found in nature as well as in the human body. When the elements are balanced, one experiences overall well-being in mind and body. When the elements are out of balance, one experiences disharmony. Over the next several weeks, we will be exploring the five elements, beginning this week with the earth element.

The qualities of the earth element include solidity, firmness, security and stability. Examples of the earth element found in nature include trees, mountains and the ground we walk on. These qualities are experienced within the physical body as strength and structural support, especially in the bones and joints. At the psychological level, the earth element provides the emotional stability that allows us to move through life with a greater sense of trust and security, leading to enhanced serenity.

If you would like to increase your connection to the earth element, there is a variety of techniques to practice.

  • Sit or lie on the earth: bring a blanket, maybe even sit under a tree. Feel the grass, sand or concrete on your bare feet.
  • Yoga poses: Standing poses such as mountain, Warrior 1 and 2, and triangle pose.
  • Walking meditation: A very grounding practice. I highly recommend trying it, or returning to it if you are familiar.
  • Mantra: “Attuned to the earth’s stability, I move confidently along my life journey.” Repeat the mantra once or several times a day. Perhaps when you wake up in the morning and before going to bed. The mantra may also be incorporated into a daily meditation practice.

To experience the benefits of the earth element, I suggest choosing a technique or two and practicing it on a daily basis for at least a week. It might be helpful to take notes or journal your experience. Be aware of enhanced feelings of grounding, serenity and security.
