Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
Which form of produce is the best? Whether you prefer fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables, all of them have their benefits and potential drawbacks. Here are some shopping tips when picking out fresh, frozen, and canned produce to ensure you’re getting fresh, quality products:
• Fresh-Farmer’s markets are a great way to get fresh local produce at a lower price than the grocery store. You can use the Find Food IL Map to find a farmer’s market near you. Fresh produce is cheaper and better quality when it is in season. Check out IL Extension’s What’s In Season resource to see when your favorite fruits and veggies are in season.
• Frozen-Did you know produce is frozen shortly after harvesting to preserve the nutrients? When shopping for frozen produce, avoid food that comes with sauces and seasonings, as those can be high in sodium.
• Canned-Having canned produce is a great way to get in your fruit and vegetable servings at a lower cost. Look for no salt added or reduced sodium options for vegetables. When purchasing canned fruit, make sure to get ones that are in 100% juice and avoid ones that are packed in syrup.
