Transcript
Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
Did you know many insurance plans cover Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, or RDN services? An RD can help individuals receive personalized nutrition information to help achieve your health goals. This week’s message for National Nutrition Month is “Find Advice Backed by Science.” Here are two ways to help achieve that:
• Find accurate sources for nutrition information by using reliable organizations, like Illinois Extension, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or Illinois Department of Health and Human Services. When looking at websites, try to find ones that end in ‘.edu’, or ‘.gov’, which are usually focused on education, research, or public service; not selling products. Domains ending in ‘.org’ can be reliable but require evaluation. Some .org sites are advocacy groups with a specific agenda and others may be promoting particular products.
• Meet with an RD who specializes in your unique needs. RD’s can translate research into practical guidance. They’re trained to interpret scientific studies and turn evidence into realistic, personalized recommendations. They can also tailor recommendations to your medical history, labs, culture, preferences, and personal wellness goals.
For nutrition especially, pairing credible domains with professional guidance (like from an RD) is the best approach. This week, try and look up RD services available near you. This could include seeing an RD in person or virtually. You can also find group nutrition classes through your local IL Extension office.
Thank you for listening! I hope you have a happy and healthy day ahead. The content for this episode was provided by Rachel Mannen, Food and Nutrition Educator for University of Illinois Extension.
