Family Night In - October

Fall is here, which may make you think of activities such as football games, field trips, or wiener roasts.  Instead of planning another event out, mark your calendars for a night for "family night in," where you stay home and do an activity as a family.  Some ideas for the beautiful month of October:
  • Make apple "sundaes":  Cut an apple in half and remove the seeds and stem to make a hollow area.  Provide a variety of choices and then have each person build his/her own.  Some favorites:  peanut butter; flavored cream cheeses; mini chocolate or peanut butter chips; chopped up nuts such as walnuts or peanuts; marshmallow creme dusted with cinnamon.
  • The traditional leaf pile is always a hit - rake a large pile of leaves and then everyone jumps in.  Don't forget your dog!
  • Dress up as each other.  (Be nice!)
  • Go on a nature walk around your neighborhood and find as many different leaves as you can.  Look up the process of how and why leaves change and fall.
  • Take a blanket outside and watch the stars come out.  Teach children to wish on a star:  "Star light, star bright, The first star I see tonight; I wish I may, I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight."
Remember that there are few rules for your family night in and that many times the simpler the activity, the better.  (Less stressful that way!)  Just make sure everyone in the family gets a chance to participate.
