The Faces and Places of Local Food in Northwest Illinois

What perfect timing it was to begin the blog for local foods in Northwest Illinois then to also have a great overview of local foods and agriculture written up in the Rockford Register Star's Rockford River Valley Insider's Agritourism section on June 22 (http://bit.ly/1lVIYOZ). This special insert included articles on Farmers Markets, our Open Fields Tour, Rockford City Market, cheeses of Stephenson County, wineries, orchards, barns, local food classes, fair season, growing produce for profit, and so much more. For those new to the area, here was what we might imagine as a "crash course" to the agricultural assets that we have in this area. It also served as a great reminder of all of the many local food destinations and events that you can participate in this summer and fall. I encourage all of you to look through it at the link above as there are many articles that highlight parts of the local food system that you might not know about. When I read articles like these, I'm always pleased to see so many vital signs for our local food system. There are familiar faces of growers and producers I've visited with. The fairs I've gone to. The farmers markets I've stopped in at. These are all key features that make our local food system in this area so very unique. Now you have a challenge before you to visit and participate as much as you can in the local food system this summer!
