Discover Extension's recommendations for enhancing support for Illinois seniors.

The Older Americans Act requires states to complete a comprehensive State Plan on Aging. Illinois is starting the state planning process, which involves listening to stakeholders across the state and leveraging the goals of the area agency on aging regional plans.

Learn about the suggestions Extension professionals will provide to the Department on Aging for the new State Plan on Aging on how best to support and connect with Illinois seniors and family caregivers through the matrix of Older Americans Act programs.

According to 2020 Census data, Illinois's 65+ population is now over 16% and growing, and this percentage is much higher in many rural areas of the State. Overwhelmingly, older adults want to "age in place" in their homes and community rather than moving to a nursing facility.

Explore recent updates on DHS programs across Illinois, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families - TANF, and Medicaid programs. The Illinois Department of Human Services mission is to help Illinois residents achieve self-sufficiency, independence, and health to the greatest extent possible by providing integrated family-oriented services, promoting prevention, and establishing measurable outcomes in partnership with communities.
