Did you know that the USDA has a crop insurance policy tailored for the small organic or specialty crop farmer? It is called the Micro Farm policy for farms with no more than $350,000 of approved revenue. These are an “insured revenue” type of policy and is available in all 50 states.
There are eligibility requirements: must be a U.S. citizen or resident, file either a Schedule F tax form or have records that can be converted to a Substitute Schedule F tax form and no more than half of total revenue is from commodities purchased for resale.
I did some checking and found that there are five crop insurance agents approved to handle the Micro Farm policy in Illinois. Three are located in northwest and west-central Illinois, one across the border in west-central Indiana, and for those in southern Illinois, there is an agent in far northwest Tennessee.
