Extension and community: A shared commitment

Illinios Extension logo

Illinois Extension exists to serve the people and communities of Illinois. Doing that well requires more than excellent programs. It requires strong relationships, open communication, shared responsibility, and a willingness to listen and respond.

Those commitments are reflected in the values that guide Illinois Extension: Collaboration, Credibility, Inclusivity, and Learning. They describe not only who we aspire to be as an organization, but how we should engage with the people and communities we serve.

Collaboration reminds us that Extension is strongest when we work alongside others. Our employees are expected to build meaningful relationships with community leaders, organizations, businesses, elected officials, volunteers, and residents; and to continually seek new partners and audiences. We ask our stakeholders to engage with us. Tell us what you are seeing, identify emerging needs, connect us with others, and help us understand where Extension can make a difference.

Credibility is foundational to our role as part of a land-grant university. Stakeholders should expect Extension to be an accessible, responsive, and trusted source of research-based information. We will listen, seek to understand local challenges, provide evidence-based resources, and connect communities with University of Illinois expertise.

Inclusivity means recognizing that Illinois is diverse and that community needs vary considerably across our state. We must intentionally seek perspectives beyond those already familiar to us, reach new audiences, and ensure that more Illinois residents see Extension as a resource that belongs to them. Just as importantly, we are committed to working in a manner that is inclusive, respectful, and professional, even when perspectives differ. We expect the same from our partners and stakeholders. Productive partnerships depend on open dialogue, mutual respect, a willingness to listen, and a shared commitment to working constructively toward solutions.

And Learning is at the heart of Extension. We translate knowledge into action, but learning works both ways. We learn from our communities just as we bring university knowledge to them. That exchange helps us remain relevant, responsive, and prepared for what comes next.

We also recognize that fulfilling these commitments requires capacity. Illinois Extension needs to grow our workforce and strengthen staffing within our Units and program areas. We are working to identify areas of greatest need, recruit and retain outstanding employees, strengthen connections between local Units and campus expertise, build partnerships, secure external resources, and advocate for additional state investment.

Our stakeholders are important partners in that effort. Please share the stories of Extension’s impact. Help others understand why this work matters. Provide candid feedback about where greater capacity is needed and help us demonstrate the value of investing in Extension. Our strongest stakeholders are more than participants in our programs. They are partners, advisors, connectors, collaborators, and champions who engage with us, and one another, with respect and a shared commitment to the communities we serve.

Together, guided by our values and grounded in the needs of Illinois communities, we can build a stronger Extension and ensure that the land-grant mission continues to deliver Lifelong Learning. Lifelong Impact.
