It seems like everyone is doing trivia these days. To celebrate the coming spring, I am trying my hand at writing some gardening trivia questions. Good luck!

Trivia Questions

When admiring spring bulbs, a horticulturist exclaims “Look at that Narcissus”, what are they referring to?

1. A handsome Greek man staring in a mirror playing acoustic guitar
2. A tulip with an unreasonably high sense of importance
3. A daffodil

Why are daffodils planted in everyone’s yard?

1. Because they are the best
2. Deer don’t eat them
3. Rabbits don’t eat them
4. Because the daffodils were planted 10,000 years ago and just won’t die
5. Options 2, 3, 4

Why are my daffodils not blooming?

1. They are tired of competing with the superior spring bulbs. Typical narcissus
2. They need to be divided
3. Someone cut their foliage too soon the last year and the plants couldn’t gain enough energy to produce blooms
4. Why is this all about daffodils? Are you trying to teach us something?

Why are snakes more active in the spring?

1. Snakes are still working on their New Year’s resolutions early in the year
2. They are emerging from their hibernaculum, are hungry, and ready to mate
3. They want to know how your winter was and what you’re planting in the garden this year
4. If the rest of these are going to be snake questions, let’s go back to daffodils

Since this has been a mild winter, will we have more pest insects this growing season?

1. You bet!
2. Not only more pest insects, but more beneficial and predator insects
3. Most insects are beneficial or benign, so go easy on the insecticide
4. In the end, it is pretty variable depending on your location

Okay, maybe my career path should steer clear of writing trivia questions. Hopefully, you enjoyed a little levity and learned a couple of things about daffodils, snakes, and insects.

Good Growing Fact of the Week: Another great snake for the garden is Dekay’s Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi). It preys upon small soft-bodied organisms like slugs and worms.
