Oil: Food For Your Skin

Do you find your skin to be extra thirsty this time of year? Your moisturizing routine may be to blame for this. If you use lotion and find that your skin just doesn't stay hydrated and soft all day like you wish it would...than you might just want to try being a little more European for a change.

In a nation of lotion lovers (the United States) its rare to find an assortment of quality oils on the shelves for skin care. However, if you have a health market in your neighborhood or a grocery store with a 'health' section than you most likely will.

What kind of oils might you find? To name a few...

  • Apricot kernel oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Grape seed oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Sesame seed oil
  • Argan oil

All of which have different properties and a slightly different feel. For example, if you ever put coconut oil on your skin you'll notice that it leaves a noticeably oily residue; however, apricot kernel oil rubs in really well and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth without the oily sheen...making it one of my ultimate favorites!

Why use oil? For one thing, these oils are free of harsh chemicals and petroleum by-products and contain healthy fats. They are easily absorbed and create a protective barrier helping to prevent moisture loss. This is particularly important in dry, cold wintry conditions. Most oils are also naturally non-comedogenic which means they won't clog pores. If you use lotion on your face and you are black-head prone, check to make sure your lotion says 'non-comedogenic'.

When is the best time to apply these oils? Anytime is great but the best is right when you get out of the shower before getting dressed so you can lock in the moisture. I generally apply just once in the morning and sometimes at night if the air is really dry. It might depend on the oil you choose but I have never found them to rub off onto my clothes and they don't really smell like anything so they won't compete with your favorite fragrance. If you're in to essential oils, add those to make a personalized scented oil. Reapply throughout the day as needed.
