Two essential strategies for producing apples include yearly pruning during the dormant season, and training limbs to properly support fruits. Proper pruning and training can increase fruit quality, reduce diseases, and improve the longevity of the tree, but many tree owners are apprehensive about the process.
Shirley Blackburn, owner of Partridge Point Orchard in Metamora, will demonstrate how to prune and train young apple trees for backyard growers.
NOTE: Rejuvenating mature apple trees requires different strategies that will not be covered in this session. For more information about rejuvenating mature trees, contact Kelly Allsup at 309-663-8306 or kallsup@illinois.edu.
