Join us for an engaging webinar on October 15 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm to hear about sustainability efforts occurring in our communities, specifically on campus at Illinois State University.

At ISU, “Sustainability is defined as a practice in which we consider the implications of our individual and collective actions; the interconnectivity among people and ecosystems coexisting within communities and across the globe; and a vision for an equitable and thriving planet for generations to come.”

Why Does This Matter to You?

More than 5 years ago, the McLean County landfill closed because it had reached capacity, and we now spend more than $1 million each year managing our waste- shipping it to nearby communities. Efforts at ISU, aided by the Office of Sustainability, provide a model for recognizing how to lower the amount of waste going to landfills. Primarily they work to encourage students to first refuse, reduce, and reuse before needing to recycle.

During this webinar, you’ll learn about ISU's key initiatives, including:
  • Share Shop: A program that encourages the exchange of items to reduce waste.
  • Fix It Friday: Repair sessions that extend the life of everyday items.
  • Pass It On & Front Yard Free Cycle: Initiatives promoting the reuse of goods within the community.
  • Zero Waste Events: Strategies to minimize waste during campus events.
  • Water Bottle Fillers: Efforts to reduce plastic pollution by promoting reusable water bottles.
Focusing specifically on ISU's programs, zero waste events, and avoiding plastic pollution, this presentation aims to illuminate ISU's intentions to create more cyclical systems for waste through reusing, composting, and recycling. These efforts work to decrease harmful contaminates that end up in our landfills- affecting our environment and our own health.

The webinar link will be emailed to registered participants on October 14.
