Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
Ever wonder how to take care of aging skin? While wrinkles and aging spots are more common in older adults over 50, it can happen to anyone. Caring for aging skin includes staying hydrated, being safe in the sun, and using gentle skin treatments. Here are 5 things to include for healthy skin:
• Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen regularly with a minimum SPF of 30, even on cloudy days, to help decrease the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) can also increase the risk of skin cancer.
• Antioxidants: Skin products with antioxidants, like Vitamin C, can help protect skin from environmental damage. Food like beans, berries, and nuts contain antioxidants.
• Hydration: Staying hydrated isn’t just important for health but can also help maintain skin barrier function and reduce dryness.
• Gentle Cleanser: Use a mild, gentle cleaner to help remove dirt and oil. Avoid scrubs and strong fragrances that can be irritating to the skin.
• Moisturize: Apply a moisturizer regularly to help keep skin hydrated and smooth. Having one that is fragrance free and contains hyaluronic acid or glycerin can be helpful to retain moisture.
