Good morning. This is your Wellness Wake-Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, and what better time to celebrate than now, as summer gardens are already starting to bear some of our favorite garden crops?
Fruits and vegetables are an excellent addition to a healthy diet because they contain key nutrients our bodies need and help protect us against many chronic health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. In addition to the many health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, there are many varieties to choose from and many ways to prepare, cook, and serve them.
Popular Produce to Try this Summer
Strawberries. The strawberry is one of the most popular fruits in season this June. Like many other berries, strawberries are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C. They are also low in calories, with only 53 calories in one cup of sliced berries.
These flavor-packed berries are incredibly versatile. You can eat them fresh, add them to water for flavoring, or use them in any number of dishes. Add them to baked goods, cereals, desserts, ice cream, pizza, salads, sauces, and smoothies for a splash of color and flavor.
Depending on your location, you can find other seasonal items like asparagus, cabbage, eggplant, lettuce, peas, and turnips. You may even see a variety you’ve never tried before!
