Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
October is Health Literacy Month, a time to recognize the importance of finding, understanding, and using health information to make informed decisions. Health literacy isn’t about how smart someone is, it’s about having the knowledge and confidence to navigate everyday health situations, from reading a nutrition label to understanding a medical diagnosis or asking questions during a doctor’s appointment.
When health information is confusing, it’s easier to feel overwhelmed. But improving health literacy can lead to better communication with healthcare providers, safer medication use, and healthier choices for ourselves and our families.
Throughout this month, we’ll explore practical ways to build those skills. We’ll discuss media and digital health literacy, including how to spot trustworthy health information online. We’ll share strategies for communicating effectively with your doctor, so you leave appointments with the answers you need. And we’ll highlight medication safety and how pharmacists can be valuable partners in managing your health.
The good news is that health literacy is a skill anyone can strengthen. It starts with asking questions, seeking reliable sources, and remembering that it’s okay to ask for information to be explained in a different way.
This week, focus on one small habit that builds health literacy like writing down questions before your healthcare visit or choosing a trusted source for your health information.
Thank you for listening! I hope you have a happy and healthy day ahead. This has been Kristin Bogdonas, food and nutrition educator, with University of Illinois Extension.
