The farmers’ market is a place where healthy, fresh, and local meet. Who wouldn’t feel good about spending their hard-earned money here? Not only are you supporting local agricultural businesses, which means a lower carbon footprint, but you get to take home the most incredibly fresh produce. Plus, with many farmers’ markets holding special events, such as providing free music and entertainment, there is something for the entire family to enjoy.
For first time farmers’ market goers, you may be eager for some tips on how to navigate your way through the market. First, get there early. Arriving as soon as it opens will ensure that you get want you want before it sells out. On the other hand, you may get better deals later in the day when the producer is eager to sell the leftover goods, but don’t be too disappointed when it’s the “bottom of the barrel” and less appealing in looks. While you may be eager to talk the producer down in price, remember that local farmers and entrepreneurs still have a lot of expenses invested in the operation. Instead of haggling and buying all your produce from one producer, shop around first and look for the best price.
Second, many go to the farmers’ market and buy a lot of great looking produce, but then get home and realize that they have no idea what to do with it! Farmers’ markets are a great way to try new or unfamiliar produce and expand your fruit and vegetable repertoire. Ask the producer for tips on how to store and prepare the product or visit go.illinois.edu/EatMoveSave.
Many farmers’ markets accept credit or debit cards, and some are authorized to accept SNAP benefits, or Illinois Link cards. But you may want to check before going or bring cash just in case. Other things to consider bringing include reusable bags, a cooler if you plan to buy meats or if you don’t plan on going straight home after the market, and the kids…kids are more likely to eat their veggies if they help pick them out and are involved in the making of dinner! Plus, it’s a great way to get them outside and exposed to colorful produce and local agriculture. Enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of your local farmers’ market. There’s nothing better than fresh, nutritious produce right at your fingertips.
