"University of Illinois Extension is celebrating the language of trees this spring and summer with a Tree Walk Series" states University of Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator Kelly Allsup. Join us in different locations throughout the area for a late spring tree walk series to learn and identify several different species with notable characteristics. Many people can identify an oak or maple by leaf but would not know how to identify a black walnut but its leaf scar or bark. Another advantage of attending these walks would be to learn more diverse trees that may be highlighted in your own gardens.
On May 22, Kari Houle, Horticulture Educator will highlight the spring bloomers of Illinois Central College in East Peoria from 1:30-3 p.m.
On May 29 Patrick Murphy, Horticulturist & Curator for Fell Arboretum will visit some of the stately specimens Illinois State University in Normal from 9:30-11 a.m. and again from 1:30-3 p.m.
On June 19 Travis Cleveland, Extension Specialist will visit the diverse ornamentals of the Illinois Wesleyan University Campus in Bloomington from 9:30-11 a.m. and again from 1:30-3 p.m.
All gardeners are encouraged to attend this journey throughout three very well-known public spaces in our area. Please register at https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?RegistrationID=12377 and pay a $5 fee to attend the walk. Participants will get a color handout and notes on trees covered in the walk and each walk will be limited to 25 participants for a better experience. Join us on a tree walk series around the community to learn and identify several different species with notable characteristics during this time of year.
