Mikayla Peters holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary Medicine and a Master of Science in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her passion for agriculture began at an early age through 4-H, where she spent more than a decade exhibiting beef cattle, swine, sheep, and other livestock. These experiences helped develop her passion for agriculture while building skills in leadership, responsibility, communication, and community involvement.
Growing up on a family farm and remaining actively involved in agriculture throughout her life has shaped Mikayla's commitment to youth development and agricultural education. Her strongest passion has always been the beef industry, where she has gained hands-on experience in cow-calf management, herd health, nutrition, reproductive management, pasture management, record keeping, and cattle evaluation. Working with both registered and commercial cattle has allowed her to develop practical skills while fostering a deep appreciation for the livestock industry and the people who support it.
Prior to her current role, Mikayla served as an Extension Program Coordinator with McLean County 4-H, where she coordinated the county 4-H show and supported educational programming, volunteer engagement, community outreach, and youth development efforts. She also gained experience at the University of Illinois Beef and Sheep Research Unit, assisting with livestock management and agricultural research. In addition, she continues to serve as a Professional College Mentor with Illinois Beef Extension, helping producers and young professionals explore opportunities within the beef industry.
Mikayla is passionate about helping youth discover their interests, develop leadership and life skills, and gain meaningful hands-on experiences. She believes agriculture provides valuable opportunities to build confidence, foster responsibility, and strengthen communities.
As the Visiting 4-H Youth Development Educator for University of Illinois Extension in St. Clair County, Mikayla oversees all aspects of the county 4-H program. Her responsibilities include developing and delivering educational programs, building community partnerships, coordinating countywide events and experiences, and creating opportunities for youth to grow through agriculture, STEM, healthy living, leadership, and college and career readiness programs.
