On November 12, 2025, University of Illinois Extension welcomed 15 new Master Naturalist Interns into the volunteer program after they completed 13 weeks of hybrid training. Components of training include reading, watching educational videos, hands-on learning with field trips, and online class sessions. The Master Naturalist training program covers a wide variety of topics, including wildlife, local habitats, and environmental ethics, among many other topics. Designed for adult learners, this training allows participants to dive deeper into understanding the local Illinois environment and then share environmental education with local communities as Master Naturalist volunteers.

One Master Naturalist Trainee shared, “My favorite part was the field trips and being able to meet new people who have a similar mindset to me, even though we seem to be from disparate backgrounds and experiences.” Another notes, “I really enjoyed the presentations by all of the people who presented to us from their knowledge and passion for nature in general.”

We are so thankful for this new class of community learners as they help extend Illinois Extension’s mission and vision. Master Naturalist volunteers can be found statewide, and our volunteers specifically cover Livingston, McLean, and Woodford counties. Volunteers support several programs, such as offering family events at Fugate Woods, leading hikes at Comlara Park, and visiting various libraries for summer reading programs. Master Naturalists offer something for everyone. From learning about backyard birds to planting natives, we all interact with the environment and can benefit from learning alongside Master Naturalists.
