Maria E. Gutiérrez is an educator, advocate, and community leader dedicated to empowering youth and families to become the next generation of leaders, STEM innovators, and changemakers. As a first-generation immigrant and college graduate, Maria draws upon her lived experience and cultural identity to help remove barriers for first-generation students and expand opportunities for historically underserved communities across Cook County.
At the heart of Maria's work is a commitment to transformative family engagement. Grounded in evidence-based frameworks, including the pioneering work of Dr. Joyce Epstein, she elevates parents into leadership roles as peer mentors, advocates, and partners in their children's educational success.
Through the Juntos 4-H Program, Maria successfully engaged Latino families in educational enrichment and leadership development opportunities, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate educational systems while fostering sustained family involvement in their children's academic journeys. Her efforts strengthened connections among schools, families, and communities, creating pathways for long-term educational achievement and civic engagement.
A Certified Real Colors Facilitator, Maria creates culturally responsive environments where youth and families are recognized as active contributors and co-creators of change. Her leadership has extended to key initiatives with Chicago Public Schools, the Illinois 4-H Better Together Committee, and the Prairie View A&M University Latino Advisory Committee. Recognized at both the state and national levels for her contributions to youth development, family engagement, and inclusive programming, Maria has received multiple University of Illinois Extension honors, including the 2025 Inclusive Excellence Team Award, and is an active member of Epsilon Sigma Phi and the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals (NAE4-HYDP).
Rooted in her Mexican heritage and guided by a deep commitment to authentic community engagement, Maria finds inspiration beyond her professional work through international jazz, crocheting, and baking, pursuits that reflect her creativity, cultural pride, and belief in the power of building connections across communities.
