Maria E. Gutiérrez is a passionate educator, advocate and community leader dedicated to empowering youth and families to become the next generation of leaders, STEM innovators, and changemakers. As a first-generation immigrant and college graduate, Maria draws upon her lived experiences, cultural identity, radical empathy, and family-centered approach to help dismantle the systemic barriers that first-generation students will encounter and expand opportunities for historically marginalized communities.
Grounded in a strengths-based and family-centered philosophy, Maria works in deep partnership with Black, Brown, immigrant, and marginalized communities throughout Cook County to help build pathways that foster educational success, leadership development, and community empowerment.
At the heart of Maria's work is a steadfast commitment to transformative family engagement. Recognizing parents as their children's first teachers and most influential advocates, she is passionate about elevating parents into leadership roles as peer mentors, community advocates, and lifelong learners. Through adult education, leadership development, and capacity-building initiatives. Her work creates opportunities for families to strengthen and expand their skills, increase economic and professional mobility, and actively shape the systems that impact their lives.
Drawing upon evidence-based family engagement frameworks, including the pioneering work of Dr. Joyce Epstein, Maria has played an instrumental role in the success of the Juntos 4-H Program, equipping Latino families with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to navigate educational systems and advocate effectively for their children's futures. Her leadership in spearheading resource-access initiatives across Cook County reflects her unwavering dedication to expanding opportunities and addressing inequities experienced by marginalized communities.
